Suitably our test specimen comes in poison green. If the color does not suit, it can also order in deep black. We have mounted the Diamond in a Knolly Warden with 27.5 “wheels. The spring travel is 160 mm. In addition, the Diamond is also available for 29 “wheels and 130, 140 and 150 mm suspension travel. The standpipes have a circumference of 35 mm. The offset of the fork is 44 mm in the 650b version. For a 160 mm spring travel, the installation height is 555 mm. The suspension consists of a mixture of air (positive chamber) and a steel spring (negative spring). The brakes are recorded with the Postmount standard. Brake discs up to 203 mm can be installed. The wheel is clamped with a QR 15 axle. On the scales is the Diamond with unaboothed shaft 2190 g.
Setting can be done at the Diamond’s Rebound with 24 clicks, Low Speed Compression (LSC) with six clicks, the High Speed Compression (HSC) with 28 clicks.
But what makes the Diamond a special feature is the “off the top” technology (OTT). But what is behind it?
With this technology, in addition to the air pressure in the positive chamber, a negative spring (steel spring) can be pretensioned with 14 revolutions per internal hexagon, which can influence the response behavior with small impacts. Compared to other enduro and trailbars, where the positive chamber is filled with air and the pressure in the negative chamber automatically adapts, this technology offers an additional individual tuning option.
As a special gimmik, the Diamond also has a fender, which can be attached to the casting simply, fast and stably with a screw and two pins. However, the Fender serves more as protection for the dip tubes and the seals. We could not find a splash protection for us as a driver.
And we were formally killed. The green of the diamond shines like diamonds and we got a glow in the eyes, as only our women get with just these noblest stones.
The contrast between the green of the casting in conjunction with the black dip tubes looks very smart. The adjusting wheels also feel good and make a stable impression. The screening of the HSC should be more defined for our taste. With the LSC, this is not so important, because for the six clicks, the numbers one to six are printed and the lever can always be adjusted well. Great approach!
For this, it should be noted that the damping of the pressure stage does not increase in the clockwise direction, but rather in the opposite direction. The OTT can be easily adjusted using a 5 mm Allen key. However, for this purpose, the actual rotations with the tool are not used as an orientation. The axle is a further indication of good, valuable work. This is outwardly conical (provides more stiffness), the thread is inside (provides protection for the thread) and the lever provides the possibility to tilt it in any direction of the sky. The plug-in axle is clamped with the help of a counter-screw.
Installation & Setup
At the installation we experienced an unsightly surprise. Our Syntace wheel did not fit into the fork, despite the appropriate hub standard. The dog lay buried in the fact that the screws of the brake disc remained attached to the postmount of the Diamond. Also the change to other brake discs including narrower screws and the adjustment of the hub play has brought no remedy. There had to be another wheel. The Hive kindly provided us with a suitable impeller from e * thirteen.
The extensive videos and basetunet tables on the DVO homepage served as a guide to the exorcism. With this help, the first setup was not a witchcraft. Compared to other suspension forks, we used a higher air pressure in the positive chamber for the appropriate SAG of 25%.
When driving on trails, the fine response was already noticeable, because even at slow pace, the Diamond has responded to small bumps really well and followed the ground. This allowed the wheel to be controlled at any time.
If the pedal is more powerful, we simply use the attenuation of the low speed compression. So the fork remained quiet and did not rock. Thanks to the integrated display on the adjusting wheel, we did not have to count any clicks, were able to do this during the trip and had our original setting for the downhill turn.
So far so good, but a suspension fork is made for the downhill and now we finally want to know if we can drive this terrible little man in our head once for all times.
On the first slow-paced trail-meters, a grin suddenly spread over both ears. The response was really good and the Diamond swallowed away the bumps. During a trip to the Bikestolpern in high alpine terrain, we came across this very slowly in passages, where it is important to have peace in the bike and to meet the line cleanly. The OTT did all the work. And although we were driven with little LSC, the fork was not unnecessarily springy.
But how does this work at higher speeds, jumps or fast settling curves? Sack the fork away? Nope! Even at a fast pace, the front wheel sucked on the ground and offered a very comfortable feedback, without giving big shots to the driver. We wanted to know it and the Diamond at a departure with 3,500 depth meters at a time and also at the Big Five Challenge in Saalbach really tickled. What we noticed is that we had no problems with the so-called armpump. Was this the first indication that the small-never-satisfied man had fled?
Also over the one or the other double or drop we have the Diamond hunted. And here, too, she made a great figure. Especially with drops, a pleasant feeling has set itself after endless spring travel. We used more damping in the HSC for jump-loaded trails. We have found that three to four clicks are necessary to achieve a noticeable change. Fortunately, however, this had no effect on the sensitivity of Diamond.
In open corners as well as fast downhill curves, the Diamond also impressed us with a great performance and ensured a great grip on the front wheel so that quick changes of direction were easy and controlled.
What role has OTT taken?
In all the maneuvers, we have found that the air pressure is the character of the Diamond, but the OTT has a clear influence on it. Thanks to this interplay of air and steel springs, we have always been able to adjust the Diamond appropriately. For streamige Trailaction we wanted a rather softer vote. We have achieved this by lowering the air pressure while reducing the pretension of the steel spring. If we were on bike park routes on the road we increased both the air pressure and the pretension. As a result, we still had a very sensitive response but also sufficient spring travel reserves. And that is the great advantage of Diamond. At the Diamond you have a certain individual freedom, regardless of the air pressure, whether you want to have some more feedback or a little more plushness.
Are Diamonds Bikers Best Friends and let the demon out? In our opinion, yes, but …!
After the unsightly surprise at the installation, whereby we have determined that the built-in dimensions are cramped, the Diamond could convince us of the performance completely. The big advantage over the obsession is the OTT technology. It offers an additional tuning option and makes the Diamond unique. The Diamond always provided us enough spring travel, but never more than necessary. A great response thanks to the OTT and the pleasant feedback from the trail make the weight of 2190g easily forgotten. Even with the price of RRP 999.00 € the DVO Diamond is in our opinion a good alternative to the establishment.
